i got lots of good advice in response to this question.
then, i stumbled across david barrett's columns
on playing accompaniment in harmonica sessions,
an online magazine.  for those interested, it begins at

and proceeds at least to the current (december 2004) issue.
haven't been through them yet, but they look pretty good.
